Shives (Red)
Red shives are single-use polypropylene cask closures used to seal the shive hole in wooden and plastic casks. Colour-coded red for clear identification, they accept a standard keystone spile and are designed for secure, airtight sealing throughout conditioning and dispense.
Red shives are single-use plastic cask closures manufactured for use in traditional cask-conditioned beer production. Designed to seal the shive hole in the head of a cask — the larger of the two openings — they provide a secure, airtight closure during filling, conditioning, and storage. The red colouration provides instant visual identification on the cellar floor and across a mixed stock of casks.
Shives are fitted at filling and accept a standard hard or soft spile driven through the centre boss, allowing controlled venting during conditioning and precise management of cask condition prior to dispense. Once the spile is in place, the cask can be vented or sealed as required to achieve the desired level of carbonation in the finished beer.
Red shives are compatible with standard wooden and plastic casks across all common sizes and are manufactured from food-grade polypropylene. As single-use closures they eliminate the cleaning and inspection requirements associated with reusable shives, reducing cellar labour and the risk of contamination carry-over between fills.
